I assume this is because the author met heaps of clinically messed up gay men in a time when there were no visible gay role models. The book suffers from generalizing both of “gay men” and of “gay trauma”. It was fine overall and I assume helpful, but over time, I have learned gay men are a mixed bag where some are truly fucked up and others are truly special and exceptional people made stronger by their difficulties. Probably too low to the point i put up barriers to protect myself and missed out on opportunities to connect. It absolutely describes the author’s clinical experience with very fucked up (largely affluent white) gays of a certain period of time.įor me though, I read it when I was coming out, and it set my expectations very very low for gay men.
